Introducing Shirley Dwyer - Maesbrook Manager
In this blog, we’d like to introduce you to our Registered Manager, Shirley Dwyer.
Shirley has been at Maesbrook Care Home for 26 years. Born in Shrewsbury, she trained in Birmingham where she became qualified as a Registered General Nurse and Registered Sick Children’s Nurse.
Her career led her to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where she worked as a Staff Nurse for a number of years before moving back to Shrewsbury to be closer to family. She joined the team here at Maesbrook in 1997.
Shirley’s day typically starts at around 8am, when she checks the overnight reports, responds to emails and begins her rounds visiting each of our residents.
She’ll take bloods if any are required that day, carefully audit residents’ medications and care plans, arrange food and fluid charts for those with a low intake, and liaise with the nurse in charge to update them on residents’ wellbeing.
“I really enjoy working at Maesbrook – it’s a truly rewarding role with lots of variety, and my favourite part of the job is listening to our residents’ rich and varied life stories,” says Shirley.
She adds: “It’s like a second home to me, and I love that every day is different. We not only care deeply about our residents, but we care about each other too – it really does feel like a family, and I think that’s another reason that Maesbrook feels like a ‘home from home’ to our residents.”
